Music is my bread and butter : Mengu-Suokhrie

Mengu Suokhrie is an enthusiastic singer, a natural born singer who is usually known by  the girl in a red dress with the guitar for her music video  “You are mine”. She is among the most decorated lady singer in the Nagaland. She has been into music industry for more than 15 years now. She  loves to connect people with her song, so she doesn’t limit herself to one genre itself. The lady is down to earth and friendly as well .
Mengu is a singer, song writer, composer, music recording artist &vocal teacher.

Let’s listen to her story
Mengu, please introduced yourself to our readers
Hello everyone, my name is Menguseii and  an artist name so called  Mengu Suokhrie
Well, I grew up as a girl with endless wishes and dreams from the hills of Nagaland. I am an Angami, from Kohima Village, L.Khel.

Let’s hear more about your childhood, when did you start singing and how you choose this field.
At first, the only thing I wanted to become was an air hostess like every other girl of my age. I even used to sing about it. Then while I was doing my high school I started singing in the school chapels and Sunday schools. Then it continued, but I never really planned or even tried to be a singer, when we girl friends played doll game I still took the role of an air hostess.

When was your turning point in Music Industry?
It was when I got enough sense of how much I love singing, I thought about it and soon I was determined to become a musician, I thought of polishing my skill so i took some courses.  I grew my love for music, especially singing grew and it's still growing hahaha

Being a lady singer, do you get that respect in the society or people looked you down at first?
Those days there were very less female musician. So, I was quickly recognized though I never entered any competition as such. Well, I think as a girl or lady performer, I was accepted even better then a male artist guy’s love girl’s you see.
Luckily I haven't experience any partiality so far. Professionally, for the past 15 years, I have been performing and going around India and not just Nagaland but I was accepted, and the love and respect I get is overwhelming. And I don't think anybody should even think about degrading a lady performer, because gender doesn't matter. The confidence and talent matters, a guy maybe good but if the girl is better than him, she should be applauded.
My parents support me and does not lay rules or bind me with limitations. I can go everywhere I have to go, if need be they'll even come along with me. And we don't just go out like that. We confirm and check the security first, and then only we go, right? So my parents are happy and feel safe too.

Mengu, do you write your own script, what’s your genre?
Yes, all the 12 originals songs I have got so far were all felt and written. And I will still write more but I am also thinking of working with some professional writers. Now am in progress with two of the song writers
My genre, ok here it might sound disappointing to some or confusing to some, but for me I love every genre of music, I listen to all from death metal to pop. But it's not that I can perform all so I selectively do more of R&B and pop rock, though my heart is always for Jazz and blues. As a performer I also like to let my crowd sing along so I choose the genre according to place, and people for gigs. And when it comes to creating my music, it is a mixture of fun, simple keys with melody.

Are you the only child?
Oh no, I am blessed with a big family I have 5 more siblings, 3 males and 3 females in the family, and I am the responsibility free wala because I'm not the youngest nor the eldest.

What inspires you? How is music related in your life?
Life itself is an inspiration for me, I sing and I like to write about life, how we live, the love we experience, the challenges, the struggles, about a person or even thoughts. And I keep singing at every moment of life, not just when I'm sad or lonely but even when I'm happy or confused or even angry. This is how closely and attached I am with music. Sometimes there are twists and turns in life that leaves us speechless, but for me there's always a song that expresses my frustration or hurt or joy.

What is your dream as a musician?
The dream is to reach out to the world through my songs.

Beside music, what do you do for living? None of the musician I have interviewed said they take music as a career.

Well then, I am the first musician you interviewed who is a full time musician. Music is not just my love but also my bread and butter. I teach music, I perform music, it's my profession. And I am making a life out of it too. And I am really glad and thankful because this is the area where I can put my whole mind and heart. If my parents force me to become a doctor maybe I would have but I won't be happy, dissatisfied and may not be good at it too. But for me I am really Thanking God for letting me do what I love to.

What would you say to a struggling artist who is undecided in life, a musician who is afraid to take music as a career?
Firstly, whatever field it is, sit and think about it carefully. Are you sure about yourself? Whatever field it is there's gonna be struggles, it’s not gonna be an easy ride always, in times that struggle will refine and polish you, but you be determined and sure of your choice, dream and wants.

If you really wanna be a musician, work hard, hold on and don't just give up in one or two attempts. You know who you wanna be, and nobody knows you like you do. Be sure of what you want, don't be under pressure. If you forcefully or unwillingly choose a career, you’ll never succeed or be the best there. You know what you are good at so choose it rightly, be sincere, be bold and face criticisms, and don't easily get disappointed.

And to those who are planning to take up music as a career, I say, go for it. A lot of people still think that music as a career is a wrong choice and that it won't be successful, but things have changed. You can be a music teacher, a musician, or performer, and happily live like the rest. If you have what it takes then you can surely make it. But don't forget that if you’re not hard working and sincere wherever you are, you'll be a failure.

Share us your favorite quote Mengu.
Hmmm 'Love is all we need' is the quote and song I strongly believe. About everything that's evil and bad, we always complain. And, we dream of a peaceful world and the only solution to all this is Love. Love can cover all, love is all we need.

What’s your biggest failure and how did you manage to go through it?
Blunders up on stage, mistakes is a sign of being human we say.. But it's really scary, and it happens so covering up without reacting much to it, and cursing self is the best way.  I always act normal but learn lessons from it and next time am more alert and avoid such beautiful disasters.

Is Nagaland growing in Music industry? Why haven't we been noticed by the rest of the India and the world? Your views?
Yes Nagaland for sure is growing, and I think it's a very impressive growth. And we can't and shouldn’t say that we are not noticed by the rest of the world. because our music is now very much heard by outsiders . Thanks to smart YouTube, and our very own Indi hut, and special thanks to Music Task Force and Rattle and Hum. Last year we went to perform at Royal Military Tattoo, at Edinburgh, Scotland and the Hand Shake Concert happens every year where a performer from Nagaland goes abroad.. Now we are very much heard.

You seem to be an energetic lady, full of fun, no tension.  How is that so?
hahahhaha well I do get tired and my battery does go down but it's more torturing for me to be low, so maintaining self to stay fit and healthy to be jolly and calm is very important for me.

Did you ever felt like giving up as a musician?
To be honest, yes, I did feel like giving up, it’s hard to survive on bunch of flowers u see  , but thankfully I didn't give up and then things changed, slowly people understood that singers and musicians too eat and drink.

What are your 5 years plans?
5 years from now I wish to be running a music institution.

What's the reason behind your journey so called success?
I could walk all these miles, across the oceans and mountains not by my might but because of God, my strength. I owe everything to God, all thanks and Glory to him alone. Everything I am and have is His. His grace enlightens and sustains me. This journey is impossible without God. Yet, I still have a long way to go to call it a success.

Give me a flashback of a person who gave a compliment that you would never forget.
Once a little girl came to me with her mother, she'd be around 5 years old I guess. After a gig she came up to me, shook hands, she had a big smile on her face, so cute she was. I asked her what she wants to become then to my surprise she said ' I wanna be you’, I laughed, I asked her why?  She shyly said ' I will also sing 'oh Holy night, like you, I want to also stand and raise my hand and sing loudly and sing high pitched songs like you' and on hearing that I was so taken, her mom then explained that ever since she saw me singing at a street Christmas carol, she wanted to become a singer like me. I don't remember which event she meant or where I sang that, but that little girl made me realize that I should be very careful, I don’t know her but she had her eyes on me ,well then i realized i can't be setting any wrong examples to others. I usually take everything casually but the incident with her taught me to be more careful.
What's your biggest achievement you have achieved so far?
For me the biggest achievement is being accepted and known in the society as a musician. My music is played, heard and accepted and that's all I ever wanted as a musician. I am thankful to all my supporters for their love.

Are you married? Hope you don’t get offended with it?
Well I wish to get married but nobody is proposing me, so sometimes I think that guys are afraid of me and thus I'm still unmarried and happily single.

Our reader might want to know what type of guy you like.
Well, in this fancy world I don't wish for a man with good cars or someone with crocodile shoes, but a God fearing and kind gentleman who knows his responsibility will do good for me, I don't care if he wears bata chapel, all that matters for me in a man is the heart he has, not just for me but for everyone around him. I want a man with whom I'll face all the good and bad things in life together, if there is love it’s enough Right? And yes very important, someone who will not stop me but will encourage and help me in my music field.

What would you say to a person reading this post?
To the person reading this, hello, thank you for reading through, I am a musician and I need you to help me promote and reach out my music to the world. If you can relate to me and my music please feel free to connect with me, I don't bite. And also let's keep reminding each other that to make this world a better place we need love. Let's unselfishly keep supporting, encouraging and loving each other. A single, simple act of kindness is love, all that we need is love, and Love is all we need.
By the end of this year I am hoping to release my second album and I have a gig coming up at Agri expo in Dimapur this coming 21st June at the world music day. If you are free, please scheduled your time and come for rock and roll.

Imli Lee (Dejavu) is back: Never give up

“I know it seems hard sometimes but remember one thing. Through every dark night, there's a bright day after that. So no matter how hard it get, stick your chest out, keep ya head up.... and handle it.” says Tupac Shaku

Imli Lee (Dejavu) the rapper, is one among the most decorated eminent personality in Naga Music Industry. Tolling his hardship and difficulties he had been in the industry for around 10 years. His mystery of success, hard work and labour invigilates him to be the person he is now.
He is yet to achieve his dream goals but he keeps his work focus in order to sustain and become someone in life, his story of struggle still continues and will continue on.

Let’s roll on into our guy

Mr Yo, let’s all start with your basics.
Hello, my name is Imlinochet/Kezevilie, also known by my stage name "Imli Lee (Dejavu)" I have been involved with music for the last 12 years or so. But yes I still struggling to stand on my feet.

Please enlightens us how it all started as a musician?
I used to be a poet during my schooling days and I think that's how I developed on to rapping, hip hop music and so on. I also write my own script.

Did you take any course?
No courses, no training it just came naturally. I think it’s all about the interest, if you put your heart into it, anything is possible. But not forgetting we have to sharpen our skills, of course.

Being in music industry for many years, what’s the biggest challenge you ever face?
I think getting my music through to the wider audience and trying to make a living out of it. Life is so complicated.

Would you choose Music as your career?
If I’d have established myself well enough to make a living out of making music, I would stick to music for as long as I can, otherwise besides that I’m keeping an option open to other works. I am still very young hahaha...

What are your songs all about?
My songs are basically about social issues, relationships, not literally love songs but more of motivational songs. I like to be known as a "philanthropist"

Who is behind your motivation?
Believe me when I say this, most artists’ musicians are motivated or inspired by someone or the other, and thus their music sound somewhat similar to their inspirations. But frankly I have none to my credit. I like to make my own music and the rhythm to it

Are you interest in beat boxing? It’s one of the latest trends?
I used to beat box when I started out. But now I have lost my touch. Maybe I gave up on it because I wasn't good at it hahaha maybe....

Narrate us "a moment to remember" as a musician.
I have been blessed to perform in some amazing places but one place I loved the most was perhaps in Akuluto, in Zunheboto district. We sang for a cause and the cause was fruitful.

Tell us about the biggest crowd you ever faced?
The biggest crowd would be in Longleng during the Phom day celebration and my first stage performance as a pro was in 2004 with my first band - Ritual fusion

Give us your view on how Naga music industry would grow.
Music industry is there already, it's an open venture, the only problem is within us, you see people making it big or far have enough of struggles and criticism, For instance, take Alobo Naga, but the answer lies within us, we should never give up and never stop trying. Be consistent and ever dedicated to your art. And then it will only be a matter of time, we make it big in the industry. Believe in yourself man.

Highlight us some of your awards you have got so far.
I’ve actually won several awards.  Some of them are best hip hop/Rap for 2011 &2012 by Music Awards of Nagaland, and i also have anchored a TV show- on Doordarshan titled- The Backyard Buzz

What is your message to the young buds who are aspiring to become a musician?
For the upcoming budding musicians, be real, make original music. Cover songs can get you some attention but that fades, develop on your skills and make good original music, people will remember you for it.  Don't shy away from asking help from musicians who have already made a mark in the industry.

Lastly, share us your message to the people reading the post.
On behalf of all the struggling artists, my  humble request to the people would kindly extend thier love and support, whenever any concert comes up, please try to show your support by attending the program. Most of the concerts seats are always empty and it is discouraging for musicians to take up the stage when there are less people showing up. We make music, put our heart and soul into it but our music can only grow if we get the love and support that we need. Therefore I am looking forward to a great year with my new video all set to release this weekend and my new album which comes up later this year..
You can always reach me at

Mangchinthang: A person who loves to scribble

Mangchinthang is a self taught artist and very humble person. His sketches are no mystery to his friends and people who know his art. A person who loves to scribble alot, that’s how his journey began with his pencil.  He is a person who imagines things out of the box and sketches them out of nowhere.

Let’s all listen to his story
My name is Mangchinthang of Paite community.  I am originally from Manipur of Churachandpur district.  I have be staying here in Dimapur for the past 13 years
I'll be 22 by 18 of this month...  I stay here at Seithekema, Chumukedima, Dimapur nearby to  Patkai Christian college. I recently graduated from Patkai Christian College

Mangchinthang, tell me something about your sketch.
I'm just a self taught not in a level to be called an artist.  I just draw and paint for the love of art
I have always like drawing since I was I kid. I guess I have been doing it since then till now

Where do you seek for inspiration from?
I get my inspiration from what I see around me. Even Nature or works of other artists...
I don't know well every free time, I have I'll scribble on a paper or on my notebook
I even get ideas from Google
Before the internet techno, I imagine and create pictures, mostly of nature or a scene of anything
But now with technology at hand, I just browse and get ideas and paint or sketch
As for portrait, some people use to inspire me.  When I see, I have that feeling, you know the thrill inside which makes me want to sketch their portrait.
I like the work of an Indonesia watercolour artist, Jongkie..  His works are usually of animals and imaginary character.
Realistic art works are nice but I am more interested in messy and abstract type

Have you taken any course or class?
I always wanted to take an art class but due to financial constraint i am not able to, the courses are expensive.  So my only option is to learnt through Google and YouTube.

Do you get support by anyone?
I received good support from family and friends.. Though not financially.  For financial help I'll have to help myself because no one will
I get inspiration from a friend, it happens every time but I feel the best when my own family appreciate my work because friends will always say good words but family the speaks the truth

Any awards or exhibition you attended?

I just took part in one exhibition and it was not a competition just a display type
I won a few in within college and inter college competition...
I actually never do well in competition because it has time limits and can never do anything good in situations where there time limit

Share me a moment you l always remember
This one Inter college competition which was organised by School of Management Nagaland University under the theme ‘Zoommax’...  I won the first prize in that..  It was a painting competition...  One are way to the venue. Those other competitors were like” I participate in a state level and got first” Then the other person with a district level...  I kept quite.  Was a bit worried at first but gave my best and it was I “who got first”.  It was a proud moment for me

What challenges do you face as a painter?
Challenges...  Lack of good material, we don't find good material out here..
It's available online though. Being still dependent on parents for my expense, I  can't ask for buying expensive stuffs. But then those are just minor. I can always managed with those available

Do you sell your art work?
I won't call it exactly selling. But some people use to ask for a painting. So I take the charges of the material. If they give the materials I paint it for them and keep the leftover paint as a charge

What’s your future plan; take up art as a career?
Art has fewer objectives and not yet accepted fully in our place like North East. A person like me has less chance as a career. But I will continue doing it and support myself so that I can take up some courses. I am not a quitter.  I'll look for a job and work on my art side by side.  I am also planning to exhibit and sell some works of mine in one of my brother friend studio

What do you see yourself in five years?
I believe I'll have a good job, even if it's not a first class. It's a dream to have an art gallery
I am working for it, even if it takes me more than 5 years. I'll surely make it true someday

What would you like to say to a person who wants to become a painter or an artist?
To me I'll say “If you love art and want to be an artist. Never compare your work with other. Art is a signature we have our own way. We all do it differently. Keep on drawing and drawing the more you draw the better you get and never quit... We are all artist within. Only those who never quit get successful.

Lend me your message to sum up the interview?

"You can never have everything you want. But with art you can make anything you want...  Like all the great artist have said.. Anything you can imagine is real '.
